If they think the report is fake they'll call the number on the report / ask for the official police website of your country. At that point you can still just send a 2nd real one and everything will be fine.

You should had hung up the moment they said they are transferring you to the specialist team. Call again and try again. Can't say much about .uk.co but for .com, it usually works the 1st time or 2nd (sometimes more).
