You said it best yourself: it's the coder's lounge, off topic is allowed here, the rules are loose.
And that was a reply to a bump warning, not an off topic post. No hypocrisy involved.
My logic is that people don't get helped as much when the section turns into an off-topic spamfest, and that if you wanna discuss matters that don't relate to an original post, it should be kept to VM/PM.
I've warned people in the thread about off topic, and that never works. Closing the thread is the only next solution.
If people aren't gonna help the OP solve his problem, then why should people post? It only results in an unorganized, not helpful thread, which goes directly against the point of the section. When posts are made off topic, it makes it harder for the OP to find help in the replies.
Then again, when we get threads that are solved and went off topic, it only ends up in a spamfest. If I or NextGen didn't close solved threads that have off topic posts, we would end up with derailed, solved threads that would have endless off topic replies, only a select few of which helping the OP at all.
Why would anyone want that? So they can have chats with their friends? Is that not what VM/PMs are for?
As for the thread I closed you disagreed with:
I closed it for 2 reasons:
-It was going off topic
-The question that K3AR asked was answered, and any further discussion could've been made in purez's thread in the coder's lounge
-Non-OP questions should be made and answered in new threads, so that if someone has the same question they can find it in a search later.
(sorry for bad typing btw, I'm tired and going to bed)
