I think mining itself has its days counted. It's too energy-intensive, in China the government is restricting some regions or somehting about mining because it just draws an insane amount of money. Also, coins like ethereum are switching to a proof-of-stake instead of proof-of-work (which is what bitcoin uses right now to generate and verify transactions), I think with proof-of-stake anyone that owns ETH can contribute to the system by staking their coins and verifying transactions. I do not know the intricate details but would suggest you diving deep into the proof-of-stake concept since it seems most coins will be headed that way, it just makes more sense and it is sustainable.

Mining is profitable if you dont pay your electric bill Id say its profitable to mine in places like dorms since they dont charges electricity separately.
