Does this avoid you having to pay tax?
firstly: you are going to need a VPN to connect to russian vpn
second: make sure that the price is in ruble as in the following photo: https://prnt.sc/r2qonu
once be sure that the price is in ruble
third: Choose the version you want, click on the purchase option, then it'll lead you to the payment page : https://prnt.sc/r2qplu
Fourth: when you are on the purchase page, deactivate the VPN, this will allow you to deactivate the region lock for escape from tarkov and the price will be converted from the price in ruble to the price of your location like this: https://prnt.sc/r2qqc9
proof of region not being lock: https://prnt.sc/r2qqmc
Does this avoid you having to pay tax?
Just tried this and my account is Russian and CIS countries? when exactly do you turn off vpn?
I connected to russian VPN and changed language to russian but prices are still in euros.. does it matter that I already purchased standard edition in euros before?
Does this work with upgrading your standard copy as well, like upgrading for a cheaper price?

I made an account, did the steps you suggested but even if I switch the VPN off just before clicking on a payment provider it still shows the price in rubles as you see below
And then even after that when you click on paynow it keeps the price in rubles.
For reference, I was trying to do it with Paypal (the screenshot is of a different payment provider)

just wanted to chime in and say this works perfectly. comes out to 22 USD. half price!
here are some notes
once you buy in USD it switches your edition to Other.
you can't upgrade your edition using this method. it locks your currency to the account and location you checked out with.
so be sure to get what you want on the first go. i tried fiddling it with a bit but it seems like there's definitely a flag on your account
to the guy above me. deactivate your VPN on that page and then press "< Back to payment methods". it should update to USD or whatever

Nope, didn't work even the way you suggested.
I even tried switching to a US IP to make it switch to USD...

I did a number of steps to see if it changes, the main goal is to have it converted to the desired currency, however not sure where it is meant to show on what step.

I deactivated VPN on this page or switched to US VPN
Went on to select payment method here https://i.gyazo.com/8379011468267ed2...eb889c39ea.png
Still shows roubles, if the intention is to make it show USD then did not work. To refresh, I went back to payment methods and clicked on paypal, still showed roubles.
When I entered my email in, it converted roubles into my currency AUD. It is cheaper, but not sure if I am paying for the region "OTHER" or CIS countries.

Alternative 1
I go to the payment page here: https://i.gyazo.com/c453ef952f423f37...f2fdcf1d09.png
then switched off VPN there, entered my email address and clicked "pay now"
It briefly opened a new tab, however failed to do so and returned to EFT Payment via paypal page and showed an error.

Did I do something wrong or just Tarkov
I tried this as well. Everything worked, the price showed up in rubles and EOD edition was extremely cheap, but when I turned off the Russian VPN and went back to change payment method, it switched to Euros cause I live in Europe, but it recalculated the whole process to Euros so there was no discount at all. I´ll try a different approach, but it seems that it´s not working, at least for me.
