I know I ran into this problem when trying to use realm relay and I'm sure others have too. So in order to contribute to the best that I can instead of just leeching I'm making this post.
Whats the problem?
After editing the hosts file Windows Defender detects it as infected and reverts it to the original.
How to fix it?
1. Open Windows Defender. (Can be found through search)
2. Once opened, go to: Settings> Excluded files and locations> Click Browse.
3. Click through to find the Hosts file, select it and click Ok.(By default it is located in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc)
4. Click Add.
5. Click Save changes.
6. You're Done!

Or just use proxy server mod...
Are you talking about the option when you build your client? Whenever I select that mod I get "Build failed"..
Anyways, I followed the directions from www.mpgh.net/forum/showthread.php?t=749759 but when it came to editing the host file it was always reverted, even if I dragged it from somewhere else.
BTW, does anyone know where user perms are located, or just know when a user can post links? I'm pretty sure that I'm not an advertising spam bot..

Win 8 = Win 7 with start menu optimized for tablets and touch screen computers ^.^
Even if you didn't use windows defender (which isn't bad, thanks @SwedenDaze) other securities can detect it as a trojan. On my girlfriends laptop, Webroot also detected it as infected and reverted it.
This is just a post on how to fix it for those that are using windows defender.
Yes, if you don't want to fix it then don't use win defender. But if you do want to fix it, well then.
