@itsvividly, I LOVE IT! How long did it take you to develop such a unique style? I was drawing (fanarts) animations for No Game No Life, etc. but it always looked like I tried to copy someone else's drawing style. Which was good in the end because I took people their ideas and "continued" the anime based on them (while adding some custom chars that represent each of my friends including myself) :c

Thank you! It didn't take long necessarily, but it did take a bit of thought. I wanted to develop my own style that I'd be able to replicate fluently, so I thought about what I wanted my art style to vocalize about itself and myself included. What I came up with was to make everything feel 'soft,' as though you could brush your hand across the grass and mistake it actually for gentle flower pedals. This is a children's comic, or at least it's trying to be. So, it's fitting that it's comforting, adorable, and cutesy. As a result, I came up with a pattern that I was absolutely happy with, and that was that everything was round. That's it. Photoshop- brush tool and smoothing: one-hundred and ten percent. There were no sharp edges in the linework to disrupt your line of attention.
But, here's where it gets interesting: the actual composition and design of the piece was round- or smooth I guess. I'm more strongly a graphic designer, and the philosophies I adopted in that field really helped here. Most predominantly I mean designing with intention. This is key in developing your own style. I said this initially, what does your style "vocalize about itself and [yourself] included?" As a graphic designer, I know what certain symbols, shapes, colors, communicate what kind of ideas. Realism, and true-to-life shapes can sometimes be associated with the uncanny valley, or the rough grime of reality (see "Sutherland's Portrait of Winston Churchill"). In contrast, shapes in a more artistic approach can be manipulated to play to the benefits of fantasy. This is one of the hardships though of developing something that works for your style, know what exactly you're doing. Anime and manga styles follow trends, what appeals to an audience, what makes a character seem attractive, likable- cunning like Sora.
Whether you're working with pastel or grimy colors, rough or soft edges, it all sways what your style says about itself. In this piece, and what I meant to lead up to, was that the overall design is soft. There's no hard line of attention. Your eye can wander as there's a smooth wave of detail throughout the piece, so your attention never meets abruptly a violent element. Your attention is free to do what it'd like with the most gentle wave of natural direction influencing it (line of sight of the child, design of the clouds, kid pointing). If you want to develop a style that works, design with intention. Know what everything's saying about itself. Zoom in, zoom out. Everything matters. Everything on a canvas is your style. Cheers.
(continued) In practical advice, take what I said and apply it in ways for you to learn and grow. Study styles you like, what are they doing, how are they doing it, and why. Then break that down and build it back up in a different way to do what you want to do now. Tell a unique story with your style first, and you'll have a style you can call your own.
