Doesn't matter if its leaked or not, its social engineering and warranty fraud. There is only one method on getting free shit, you can just use any excuse you want but its all the same thing at the end of the day.

To add on, anytime they feel like doing an investigation they do it. Once it becomes saturated the company becomes paranoid. Once they become paranoid they begin to check EVERY return request and such.
