I've seen this done before as a ploy for attention.

Saying nevermind, you wouldn't be interested, does the opposite of what is said, it interests you.

Which then, in-turn, triggers curiosity and you ask what happened, so then, his original plan, without blatantly saying it, still works.

By this I mean: He still tells you his story, but it is asked for, because he wants to feel the slight sense that you care the least bit.
