You can do it with VMware also I think,
I just know from other website that someone did it with virtualbox and it worked 100%.
But It will work with VMware also its the same pretty much...

He didn't mentioned what operation system he used, but since CS:GO is working on ubuntu Im pretty sure it will work also

Yeah boosters probably use something lightweight like Lubuntu, Ubuntu or Linux mint just so it doesn't use as many resources.

Because a program cant directly know if it is being started under a vm or not. The only way to tell is to scan for unique traces the vm software leaves on your system.
Example: create signatures for virtualbox,vmware and sandboxie.

Malwares are doing this already to prevent analysis from a vm software.

Sandboxie is still the best way, if you figure out how to avoid the kicks
