A lot of you might not know this, some of you may, I know at least a couple, but recently there's been a lot of shit going around on the Vibrant staff forums about classing.
People are bitching at each other about how it should be judged, how it's overly biased, etc.
What I've come to, is there are very few PROFESSIONALS on these forums. I mean with degrees, and jobs.
Not the class.
And here we are, getting classed and criticized by people who, a month or two ago, were no better than us.
It just seems flawed to me.
It's this forum-conceived hierarchy that has actually managed to separate people based on "skill".
And I'm all for having a certain rank about you, don't get me wrong.
Because there ARE beginners, and there ARE novices, and so on.
I'm just tired of people hitting certain ranks and getting all high and mighty about it.
At first, I questioned why Fringe got rid of their classing. But I think this may be a reason.
Their range of artists is so much more diverse than a lot of other forums.
PR being an exception (maybe, it's just a melting pot).
And that's because within the hierarchy of classing comes the style. It's either a tag or an LP, with the same general style that everyone follows.
It's no wonder that whenever a photography or a painting/sketching thread goes up that the classers overload and malfunction.
That in itself proves that it's an ill-conceived system with too many weak points.
I'm pretty sure if the gods of design left their perches at slashTHREE, dA, and others, it would be a nice laugh to see how we've managed segregation in art.
Or I could be totally wrong, and the art world is a lot more superficial than I thought, who knows.

I agree that classing is biased. Classing should be based on the elements that went into the work and what I mean by that is the knowledge of photoshop.
I or you or anyone may know everything about photoshop and may just not have good ideas to apply their knowledge. Style is changing a lot and will always change. You can't really base someone's class on their outcome. The only thing you can really do is critique them judged on the current style that appeals to most.
Then, of course, it's used as a flame tactic around here, which is even worse.
I could have told you that.
Classing is completely useless, in my opinion. Either its pointless ego boost or a venue to insult somebodies art without coming across as a total douchebag. What purpose did it ever serve?
i personally feel that classing is important, not so you can brag about it, but so you can see how your improving
vfx classing is a joke, noone classes well there in terms of value and reasons, besides kyly, but he dont class atm
plus noone knows how to class photos which is a joke
but the ffx art evaluation was great

I have no doubt it can do some good if used the proper way.
The evals at Fringe were impressive.
But even on PR and DV, the more "presitigious" (for lack of a better word) of the GFX forums, there seems to be segregation.
I think it's stupid.
segretion occurs, in all areas of life unfortunately
we have it hear
we have the noobs who hang in the request section and do that stuff
and there there are the guys like us who never go in there
its just human nature
I'm not the biggest fan of classing I've never done it and never will since I don't care but what you say is the truth
Fringe made a good move with art evaluation instead of classing as well as how they chose the evaluators like dyst but thats beside the point
Yeah I agree it is biased
YES.
Ryan this is why you're one of my fav forum peoples.
You pretty much have the same exact outlook I have.
Believe it or not I never got classed, and this is why.
Art cannot be classed imo.
Sure, maybe artist A. has better line work then artist B.
But artist B. may have better concepts.
Yeah when it comes to tags and shit there is good and bad..
but anyone that calls that art to begin with are just retards.
I'd say over 50% of tag artists are using other peoples shit to begin with..
so if they go and have a high and mighty attitude it's probably because they mad that they can't draw, paint, sculpt, or take nice pictures.
Classing can suck my dick.
So someone can make a better tag then me..big deal.
Would love to see what they can do on a real canvas.

I've actually had Dyst be nice to me about things.
A lot of the guys that are way up there are pretty decent people, it's the ones that hit inter and get all pompous and arrogant, for example.

Another thing is that elements are (partially) defined by people now, not definition.
So that if you're elements aren't like those of these certain people, it's not good.
Depth/atmo? Amanda.
Effects? Blane.
Anything abstract? Quert/dyst.
And so on.

Yup..pretty much.
Which whatever, all those people are great.
Other peoples stuff shouldn't be compared to it though.
That defeats the purpose of creativity.
