Every month or so somebody asks my advice about learning to program. I usually say something like this.

There's only one way that people get good at programming. Here's how it happens.

You decide to write some sort of little program. It's incredibly fun. It's so much fun you stay up all night because you can't stop.

Since you don't know how to write the program yet, as you work on it, you keep looking at tutorials or books or samples for guidance.

When the program's finished, you've learned something about programming. Your skills are greater now.

The first program was so much fun that you start writing another one. This second program involves some new stuff that you don't know yet. Maybe it's longer or more complex or requires a new technique or it's written in a new language. The significant thing is, the second program requires you to learn something new.

The second program is incredibly fun to write. It's so much fun that you stay up all night...

Rinse and repeat a few hundred times.

The key component in this process is fun. It has to be fun. That's why it's impossible for me or anybody else to tell you what programs to write. You have to choose programs and a programming language and programming tools that are fun for you.
