Why has rotmg private server development slowed down/ended in 2018? I remember back from like 2012-2015 private servers were absolutely rampant everywhere and now as far as I can see there aren't any online from mpgh or anywhere else. What happened?
One of the reasons is that back in those times, RotMG PServers had just started growing and being released. A lot of developers wanted to have their own customized RotMG server to play with friends, with custom enemies, loot, etc. Since it was just starting, anything new or different to the original RotMG (prod) servers was enjoyable and fun to play, not the case we have today, with no original and fun ideas(not as MUCH as before).
I think that the big drop of rotmg pservers started when the old and big servers shot down, and people didn't had so many good choices as they had before. Lack of creativity or ideas for new servers turned a problem, since through all these years there have been thousands of ideas put into test.
I don't think there is a fix for this, since the developer activity was so much in those days, and now is just nothing for weeks, new developers won't come by themselves, and players either. Although, it might revive a little with 2 servers that are being developed, not known as much as nilly's, but original ideas with good and active developers is always a good mix.

Rotf still exists and is pretty active

While it may exist, on MPGH it's pretty much died down.

but when the light eclipses we are all doomed.
Do you happen to mean a or one light?
Things come and go and they all have their prime times. I quit realm a good 1/1.5 years ago and stopped working on pservers. Just lost interested and I think with all the events going on in Prod alongside RotF still going strong, no one has the dedication or motivation to really work on a server to be on par with others. I just lost motivation plus, maybe we're all seasonal.
Private Servers are dead due to many different reasons today.
Back in the days they were around for making your own rotmg experience, and for others it was about being the first among everyone else to get a 1:1 vanilla server.
Then Fabiano Swagger of Doom released in 2015 and it kinda set the 1:1 vanilla concept as a standard for private servers, and all that was left to give it value was customizing it. Some good servers came up from this, but over time those who have been talented enough to make a really good server, has also realised how bad the different sources is and how bad the game (Rotmg) is just made.
This is because of the way the game functions (the server communicating with the FLASH client, with packets).
Working with any rotmg sources is actually a huge time waste. This is some even DECA has realised which is why they port it to Unity.
Those among us in this community who can actually port rotmg onto Unity aswell quickly realise, you are wasting you're time, not working on your completely own game.
My advice to anyone considering remaking rotmg in Unity is to not do it, but use more energy on making your own game. You don't even have to go far away from rotmg, but make your own game and draw inspiration from rotmg, such as how the player moves, or how shooting/projectile logic works.
Yes pservers are dead btw

Ya most the the professional developers are onto making 3d games.
As someone mentioned above, I played RotF not long ago and that was quite popular, the server couldn't keep up with the players on quite a lot of occasions. Actually a really good server too, but it is the only one I know so yeah, seems pretty dead.

not many developers are left from the old ages, most new people already have the groundwork set out from all the others yet not many people host servers
No //10char
ofc you'd say that skill
Most big name servers are being shot down but you'll find some if you join *******s for pserver and ask anybody if they know some
