It could be several reasons:
Anti Virus
Virus
Internet
Firewall
Typically can not connect to Host Server means there is a disruption in your normal internet usage. What can cause these disruptions?
1. An Anti-Virus program or firewall may be scanning packets (Data) as Crossfire sends it, Disrupting your normal game play. You might want to Add Crossfire to your exceptions list, Disable the Firewall, Or change which program you use for your Computer's security.
2. A program you are running may be updating as you play or disrupting data being sent again. Whenever you play any game you should close all unnecessary programs. Programs increase lag and may be causing this error as well. Use a program such as SmartClose or GameBooster; Programs that typically disrupt Crossfire - Skype, Xfire, FRAPs.
3. The type of internet you are using may cause this problem as well.
- If you share internet with more than one computer, The functions that the other computer is doing might be causing this issue. You may want to play Crossfire only when you can shut down these computers.
- If you share internet with your phone line, Any outgoing on incoming calls might disrupt normal internet usage and cause this issue. You may want to consider changing your plan, Or playing when the phone is not in use.
- If you are using a wireless internet connection it may be interfering in normal gameplay - You may want to consider directly connecting into your computer.
4. Keeping your computer up to date at all times! Use programs such as "Speccy" to see if you are behind in any Driver updates - Always take updates provided by Microsoft;

Please note that Cannot connect to TEST Server Is the error you get when banned, Host server is entirely to do with connection issues - Thank you for bringing that up though!
