looking for advice on where to start

basically i want to know what it would take to have my own game but basically just have it on my pc where i can tinker with it day in and day out like a time waster what programs i would need and where to look to start i see all these post about what to use and blah blah but all i see is arguing about what is better, what is not i'm not looking for that conversation. what i am looking for is a list of programs i would need to be able to create a game something like wow/vindictus time is not the problem i will be having and do i expect to release a game no i just want to work on creating some characters and some sort of town to goof off with and over time create something out of it and worry about the rest later i have some experience with graphics but no actual video game creation anything, my local tech school has removed this course along with the graphics/web design course so while i have free time i would like to play around with it.

being good or great isn't my intention learning something and having fun is.

Creating a game alone never ends up well..

You need some 3D modeling, sounds, textures, programming skills... and one single person doing all that.. Its hard.

I have tried making my own game in almost every language... Honestly, I eventually give except for a pig racing game for PSP I made that I'm porting to flash! But back to your question.

If you would like to use C++ you can go download Visual C++ 2008(has to be 2008) and Dark GDK. It can make fairly nice looking games for not being professionally developed. For models I would say you can download Google SketchUp or whatever it is called and get a plugin that exports to DirectX format so you can use with Dark GDK.

@shutupikeelu, Unity3D is what you need. It's especially made for indie developers like yourself. The documentation is one of the best I've seen and the tutorials are limitless.
