That looks really good, only question is will we find out what blending mode you used in part 2, and where is your blog?

there is no blending thats just a darkened section so you can see the selection
the pattern layer hasnt been applyed or manulipiated

part 2 added.

because its small you cant see the effect well.
follow the tut and you'll get somthing like this (a previous project i helped with)




although back then i didnt bother twisting the pattern

Oh I get it I forgot it was a gradient not a solid color.

I am really going to have to try this.
