Idm (Internet download manager)

Bear with me I have several questions

1.) Is this program still needed to download the files, because I seem to have trouble with them each time

2.) I've hit the thirty day free-trial end and I can't seem to find a good source to download a cracked (Sorry spent around 3 hours I'm helpless)

3.) Are there any alternates to use instead of this?

As much as everyone hates IDM, its actually useful as an ad blocker (given its "auto grab" avi/mpeg/video files).
