Actually...without access to the full source code, that's how they load updates and modifications. The actual basis of aIW is just using the steam SDK to make the steam_api.dll, mainly. The rest of the changes is injected, that's why the .exe launches the .dat, and then injects the updates into it.

iw4mp1.dll contains a function called PatchEnemyEngine() (or something like that, cannot remember). I will let you think about what it does.
